Hello and Welcome to Scarlet Soleil Design!

My name is Merritt Baynes, and I’m the Virginia-based artist and surface pattern designer behind Scarlet Soleil Design.

Since childhood, I’ve been drawn to playful floral patterns, rich colors, and charming, offbeat artwork. Long summer days as a latchkey kid were often spent imagining cozy interiors and sketching backyard escapes. My imagination became my way of escape and in school I was usually the one doodling. Sometimes that would be florals. Other times, it would be elaborate floor plans.

As I grew older, my love expanded beyond interiors to the outdoors. Hiking, backpacking, and running became a core part of who I am, deepening my connection to the natural world and inspiring much of my creative work. I studied landscape architecture at Virginia Tech and practiced in the field for a decade.

The foundation I built as a landscape architect still shapes how I see and create. Today, I design joyful, perfectly imperfect, whimsical patterns and florals meant to brighten daily life. Much like outdoor spaces, art and imagination have always been my way of softening the noise of the world.

Take a look around. I hope you find something that makes you smile. And don’t miss my latest fabric & home decor collections by clicking the button below.

The Pottery Shop - one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces by Merritt Baynes

Large Serving Platter/Display Piece
$300.00

Every piece I create is handmade and hand painted. This piece is substantial, weighing in at 5 pounds. It was formed slowly and intentionally. Each step takes days to weeks to complete and is a true study in patience. From throwing and trimming, to bisque-firing and painting, to the final glaze firing, my time in the pottery studio is slow and intentional. Along with it, I embrace the imperfect beauty that comes from making art by hand. Small variations, unintended splatters, and surface textures are part of the piece’s story, and a reminder that it was crafted by hand and not manufactured. Whether it is your intention to enjoy the piece as one to be admired or to be used functionally, I hope it brings you joy. Seconds sale - small chips and imperfections.
